One Time Projects – October

*Transportation is provided for all off-campus events. Pick-ups and drop-offs occur outside of the People's Bank on the side of the UConn Bookstore.

OCTOBER 5th

Day of Caring - Community Clean Up

7:30 am- 1:30 pm (4 service hours) 

The Center for Community Engagement at Eastern Connecticut State University, University of Connecticut Community Outreach and the United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut will come together with Community Partnering organizations to host a Day of Caring community event.

Eastern and UConn student volunteers will be transported to various project sites all across Windham from 9:00 am- 12:00 pm, after opening remarks from 8:00 am- 9:00 am. Students will work at the site under supervision of the Site Project Coordinator until 12:00 pm and will then be picked up and brought to the community gathering for lunch from 12:00 pm- 1:00 pm. Volunteers will take part in raking, planting, creating literacy kits for children and sorting donated school supplies. The rain site for the community gathering is Eastern’s Student Center Lobby. Projects will take place rain or shine. Sign up here!

OCTOBER 6th

Joshua's Trust - Hiking Trail Maintenance

9:50am-12:10pm (2 service hours) | 13 participants

Joshua's Trust is a land trust with 4500 acres of land in 14 towns surrounding Storrs/Mansfield. The beautiful land offers an outdoor service-learning experience close to the UConn campus. Volunteers will maintain trails, clear overgrowth on significant features of properties, and control the spread of invasive plant species to the best of our abilities. Volunteers will use loppers, rakes, and occasionally shovels. Participants should wear long sleeved t-shirts, long pants, and hiking boots/shoes that can get dirty. Sign up here!


MACC Charities

8:30am-2:30pm (5 service hours) | 9 participants

MACC Charities offers a variety of services for anyone in need within the community. Volunteers will participate in projects such as helping the chef prepare the food or helping in the thrift store. Please be aware that volunteers will be placed where they are most needed on the day of the event, so you should prepare for either project. Volunteers must wear long pants and closed toed shoes. Horizons Inc. - Assist in set up for weekend programs 

9:30am- 3:30pm (5 service hours) 9 Participants 

Horizons, Inc. creates and sustains opportunities for people who have developmental disabilities and other special needs. This service project is aimed at helping the camp team set up for upcoming weekend programs. This includes making beds, leaf raking, making different Arts & Crafts templates, painting or taking and organizing inventory. Sign up here!


Mansfield Center for Nursing and Rehab- Holistic Care

1:20pm- 3:40pm (2 service hours) 9 Participants 

Mansfield Center for Nursing and Rehab focuses on providing holistic care to all residents of the facility. Volunteers will assist residents in playing bingo and/or aid the activities director in running other various activities. Sign up here!

8:40 am-12:20 pm (3 service hours) 5 participants 

The WAIM Community garden is a garden consisting of 53 raised garden beds that are planted with food crops for donation to the local food pantry and soup kitchen. Volunteers are needed to help weed, water, harvest crops, maintain weed-free paths, turn compost piles, spread woodchips, and general garden cleanup chores. Volunteers should dress for the weather and wear shoes that can get dirty. Sign up here!


GROW Windham- Gardening

GROW Windham cultivates relationships and creates space for youth, community members, and food system partners to work together to build a stronger community and local food system. Volunteers will be working to maintain gardens. Volunteers should dress for the weather and wear shoes that can get dirty. Sign up here!

Windham Area Interfaith Ministry provides basic needs and support to community members with insufficient incomes. WAIM is renovating its small goods area on the second floor of a 5 story building. This will include painting walls, building, shelving, installing flooring and other similar projects. Volunteers should wear clothes that they don't mind getting dirty. Sign up here!


Lutz Children's Museum- Clean up assistance 

8:30 am- 3:30 pm (6 service hours) 13 participants

Lutz Children's Museum provides a multi-faceted museum for children to explore culture, history, and the natural sciences through internal and external exhibits, programs, and experiences. Recently, the side of the museum has become quite overgrown with brush and weeds. Volunteers will be working to clean this up. This job will include brush removal, mowing, weeding, and some gardening. Volunteers should come prepared to work outdoors and bring work gloves and any other supplies they feel necessary.  Sign up here!

Holiday Light Fantasia is an event that is run each Winter to raise money for Channel 3 Kids Camp. Volunteers should dress for the weather (shoes/boots that you don't mind getting dirty, layered clothes, hat, gloves (thin nitrile gardening or work gloves are terrific for grasping the small bulbs). James L. Goodwin Conservation Center - Cleaning and maintaining forest grounds 

8:30 am - 12:30 pm (3 service hours) 13 Participants  

James L. Goodwin Conservation Center is a Connecticut state forest and education center covering approximately 2,000 acres in the towns of Chaplin and Hampton. This event is aimed at cleaning and maintaining the grounds of the forest through tasks such as leaf raking, painting, garden and trail maintenance, and installing walking paths . Volunteers should dress for the weather and wear shoes that they don't mind getting dirty. Sign up here.
